A MESSAGE FROM BLOOMFIELDCITIZENS
BloomfieldCitizens organized in response to the lack of public information regarding the Niagara project in 2016. Our purpose was and still is to increase the flow of information and communication about our local government, our town and relevant issues. BloomfieldCitizens was also closely involved in changing Bloomfield government by promoting and supporting the New Generation of Democratic Leaders primary slate that upset the Democratic Party organization by a 2:1 margin, resulting in six new Town Council members being installed in November 2017.
The special election (on Tuesday, January 9) to replace State Representative David Baram led the local Democratic Party to endorse Bloomfield Middle School science teacher Bobby Gibson for that seat. Neither the new Town Council nor BloomfieldCitizens participated in his endorsement. He appears to be a good choice for change and the future representing a new and younger view that could reach out to a different segment of the population. While being aware of the difficult schedule ‘juggling’ required, the consensus is that having more science teachers in the legislature is a positive for the state.
Recent events concerning Mr. Gibson’s November arrest for DUI have posed a threat to his candidacy. Mr. Gibson’s actions, while regrettable and serious, represent, to the best of our knowledge, a first offense for which he is taking full responsibility and dealing with according to the law.
His personal misstep has been heavily exploited for political gain by those opposing his candidacy. That is not surprising. However, it is unacceptable that character assassination based upon innuendo, rumor and distortion of the facts (at least as far as we can ascertain them) have led to constant trolling and personal smear attacks upon one of our fellow citizens. BloomfieldCitizens rejects these reckless smear tactics. They represent the worst of our bankrupt political traditions – which we have long been working to redefine. Sadly, we have seen all too much of such political behavior at the national level. And while we deplore it there, too, it is within our immediate responsibility to address it when it arises in our own town. We condemn it and will not endorse those candidates that benefit from it. This is the “old politics” that we reject.
Our commitment is to transform our politics in Bloomfield through openness, mutual exchange of ideas and beliefs, and respect for differences. Citizens have every right to question candidates on the issues. They can also decide not to vote for a candidate for a transgression but they shouldn’t demonize that candidate or those who make a different choice relative to this issue. To use innuendo and false information to incite is contrary to the principles we advance.
